I'm a huge fan of Queen, mostly because their songs are so fun to sing along to at odd times of the night. Their songs have great lyrics too, and most of them are not really open to interpretation because it's pretty self-explanatory. But the lyrics of "Somebody to Love" are particularly interesting.
Sure, it's a song about loneliness and how the chores of life get down and depressed, and how you DESERVE the happiness that love brings.Every time a stupid article about dating advice and tips on how to get a guy/girl or some such rot pops up on Yahoo (which is my home page, and hence the source of most of my news), I picture someone who would take this advice seriously to be listening to this kind of song while crying into a bag of potato chips. But what I really like is that there is no description of the KIND of person he wants to love. Gender is cleverly hidden (which makes it a song men and women can sing, YAY EQUALITY) for obvious reasons (please Wiki Freddie Mercury if you don't know what I'm talking about - about time you got educated) but the specifics about character.
My craziest theory of this song is that it's actually a request from some Desi kid who's asking his parents to find him a nice Indian girl because frankly he's been working at Microsoft/HP/Intel/NVidia all day and he's tired of eating take-out every night.
My favourite part about the song is the simplicity of the statement. Once the finding has been done, then love shall simply arrive, without any hitches. Maybe that's the problem with people who are lovelorn. They've not found the RIGHT person to love. Once you do, everything just falls into place. You are relived of your burdens and world weariness, and are lonely no more.
So naive.
Still, it's an awesome tune, and one of my favourite songs ever.
Just.... not realistic at all. Oh well.
