It's one thing to be polite and civil, but in today's society, being nice is quite a slavish devotion to being like by everyone, for no apparent purpose.
Being nice apparently means having to put up with people you do not like (because they are annoying/stupid/selfish brats/ugly) and pretending to enjoy their company.
Being nice means doing favours for people you have no social or moral obligation to help, and who will never return the favour or even give you the time of the day afterwards.
Being nice means having to change your own personality into something bland and insipid which conforms to a general idea of being socially amiable.
I hate being nice.
